Fascinating breakdown of customer-centric vs. product-centric marketing! The MP3 player examples really drive the point home. (I still use mine btw)

Your analysis reminds me of Clayton Christensen's 'Jobs to be Done' theory. It's not about the product itself but the 'job' customers are 'hiring' it to do. Thank you, Mack!

Neela I love that you still have your MP3 player! I no longer have mine, but do still have all my mp3s on an external drive. Including all those Jewel bootleg songs from the 90s :)

BTW is that the ‘what is your product’s job to be done?’ If so, I love that, a great way to frame product design.

Yes it is - I think so too.

You're right, Mack. I don't think I ever heard of MP Man, but I did own a Rio. Marketing works.

Did you really? I didn't have a Rio, but I do remember seeing Diamond products in Best Buy. Customer-centric marketing is the great equalizer, thanks for commenting!

I did. I go way back! :-)

Dear Mack,

I really enjoyed your text. First, I liked the great time machine, which reminded me of many singing moments.

The main value of the text is a strong message and lesson that is applicable in all areas.

It's a great topic to think about and apply!

Thank you!

Have a great weekend!

It totally blew my mind when I realized clinical trials/pharma products and devices rarely take feedback or trials in their target market? Patient involvement is new.

Interesting, Sharon. It seems the customer is too often an afterthought when it comes to feedback and incorporating feedback into product design, sadly. Thanks for reading!
