Regardless, I am officially a punter now. FYI: Punter is a paying customre. Learned it from Rob the Yob, US Manager for the Police when we hung out the night of their first US concert. Now that I pay, I hope you can keep the good content flowing to keep me engaged.

A great piece of rock history: music directly to the fans. Imagine Grant marketed Led Zepplin pre-social media. FYI: My idol growing up was Clive Davis.

Hi Jimmy, I agree with you. it would be interesting to see how Grant would market with social media! Thanks for the subscription and heads up on not being able to comment. When I write a new post, Substack defaults it to Paid, which means I have to go into Settings for each post and manually switch it to make sure Everyone can read it and that Everyone can comment. I forgot to click the Everyone can comment box for this one. All good now, thanks for letting me know!

Hey Mack - great piece on Zeppelin. Love how you highlighted Grant as the unsung hero here. Most people know about Page's genius, but few talk about the business innovation behind their rise. Nice parallel to today's artists going direct to fans and bypassing traditional media.

Looking forward to the Sarah McLachlan story! LOVE Sarah!

Thank you Neela! I honestly hadn’t heard of Grant till a couple of months ago, found out about him in doing research for the article and went down a rabbit hole :)

Love Sarah as well! Fumbling Toward Ecstasy is one of my Top 5 fav albums ever!

Mack,

Totally loved reading about how Led Zeppelin approached their music and marketing. Here's my Led Zeppelin story. I was in high school in the early 70's and a classmate who sat behind me in a particular class, was manically drumming on his desk and humming under his breath. I finally turned around and said "what is all this drumming and humming about?" He said two words: "Led Zeppelin." I had never heard of these two words and figured out it was the name of a new band. This classmate behind me was totally entranced and captivated by their sound, beat and vocals is something I have never forgotten. And reading your article gave me an insight I now can understand why my classmate was so taken with the band. They had reached him directly and he was transformed. And I guess I was too as I remembered this story more than 50 years later! Thanks!

Wow Joyce, that’s a great story, thanks for sharing! John Bonham was an amazing drummer, I can see why your classmate was mesmerized by his skills! I bet he and his friends tried to replicate the music, which creates more fans for the band. All in a time before social media. Love it!
